This Friday (8th May), we were supposed to be running the Bar and the “Big Screen” at Ringwood’s VE Day 75th Anniversary street party in the Market Place in Ringwood. There were bands, there were march-past’s, there was music, there was food & drink – It was going to be a great day. And the COVID-19 came along as spoilt it all. Or did it?
We decided to take the celebration online, founding Ringwood’s VE Day Heroes on Facebook & Instagram, along with a page here on our website, to bring together photos of the local men & women who contributed towards Victory in Europe 75 years ago, whether that was in a combat role or on the Home Front. Whatever they did, they’re heroes in our eyes! We’ve been sharing their photos over the last few weeks & months, and on the Big Day we’ll be releasing a few more bits, to mark the day with as much of a bang as you can at the moment!
But that needn’t be it – Your friends over at Ringwood Town Council have released a guide to what we can all do on Friday to mark the big day, all from the safety of our homes! Don’t forget the Red, White & Blue bunting!
11am – 2 minutes silence on your doorstep
3pm – Churchill’s VE Day Speech to be shown on the BBC. Then grab your picnic blankets of garden table & head out to your front garden for:
4pm – Tea & Scones (Or Coffee & Cake)
6pm – Dinner & raise a glass with your neighbours
9pm – National sing-a-long with the Royal British Legion to “We’ll Meet Again” after an address by The Queen
